WHY DOGS EAT GRASS WHEN THEY ARE SICK
Have you ever wondered why your dog has decided to munch on grass whenever they’re noticeably not feeling well? There could be a few different reasons for this strange behavior. Many times when dogs feel nauseous, they want to throw up so they can feel better.
Often times, they eat grass to help them induce vomiting. Don’t be too alarmed immediately when you spot your dog chewing on blades of grass. More often than not, they are just doing this as a way to keep them entertained when they are bored or to reduce anxiousness. Some dogs may even do this because they simply enjoy the way it tastes! Eating grass isn’t a bad thing.
Many dogs that eat grass are doing it to gain back a lack of nutrients. There are a few ways to tell whether or not your pup is eating grass out of illness, or just for fun. Typically when dogs have an upset stomach, they will hardly even chew the grass before swallowing. This is because they get a tickle in their throats when they swallow long blades of grass. The tickle in their throat helps to induce vomiting.
If your dog takes their time and slowly chews on the grass, they most likely feel fine and just want something to do! If you are concerned about your dog and their habit of eating grass, try switching up their food. As mentioned before dogs can feel sick due to lack of nutrients in their diet. A change of food could help provide the nutrients they are currently lacking.
If this behavior continues or worsens, consult a vet. They may have a very serious illness or condition that needs to be treated professionally. Be cautious of what your pet eats so that you can do what’s best for them!
